August 2000: NGC 6802

The open cluster NGC 6802 is a somewhat challenging open cluster on the east end of the Coathanger in Vulpecula.

The Coathanger asterism in Vulpecula, technically known as Collinder 399, is an easy binocular target. However, tucked away at the east end of the asterism is a tiny, dim open cluster, NGC 6802.

Showing little resolution in small telescopes, the cluster looks more interesting with each increment in aperture. An eight-inch scope will show a decent amount of resolution, a dozen or so stars against an unresolved haze. A 12-inch scope should mostly resolve the cluster. Overall, the cluster is roughly 4' x 2' in size, elongated north-south.

How to get there:

NGC 6802 is located just over 3° northwest of Alpha Sagittae or 7.7° directly south of Albireo.
