May 2000: NGC 4244

NGC 4244, an impressive edge-on galaxy in Canes Venatici.

This month's object is a large, bright edge-on galaxy in Canes Venatici. Even in smaller scopes, this ghostly needle of light is a beautiful sight.

The galaxy is oriented northeast-southwest and is slightly brighter toward the center. In an 8" scope, I noted the galaxy as "smooth," but at higher magnifications in a 12.5" scope, I was able to detect a subtle lumpy appearance. Although difficult, I also detected a short segment of the dark lane and the star-like nucleus.

Though bright, keep in mind that this galaxy covers a lot of area, so the surface brightness is a bit lower that you might expect. A dark site (preferably at higher altitude) will allow you fully appreciate this fascinating object.

How to get there:

This galaxy is located 4.7° southwest of Beta Canum Venaticorum.
