NGC 3521, a bright spiral galaxy in southern Leo. POSS/DSS photo.

At magnitude 9.8, this galaxy should be visible in almost any telescope. It is oriented north-south and is roughly 5' x 2'. The outer haze fades smoothly to the background and contains a bright elongated central area which is concentrated to non-stellar nucleus. No structure or mottling was seen in a 12-inch scope under rather poor seeing conditions.

NGC 3521 lies 7° south-southwest of Sigma Leonis.
