January 2001: NGC 1579

The emission nebula NGC1579 in Perseus. POSS/DSS photo.

This emission nebula, like last month's offering, is not particularly difficult and is a nice sight in even 6- to 8-inch scopes.

The nebula is roughly five arc-minutes across and comet-shaped with the tail fanning to the west. The glow is considerably brighter toward the broad central area. There is a bright star to the north and another to the east.

How to get there:

NGC 1579 is roughly midway on a line drawn from Xi Persei to Iota Aurigae.
